The Caleb Williams Tapes: Washington (2023)

Caleb Williams’ performance against Washington in November was a polarizing game. It was the game when we saw Williams have a very human moment, crying in the arms of his mother in the stands after a painful loss to the Huskies.

I’ve said since that day that the idea that there was something wrong with that interaction was a stupid take, and after spending four hours watching, rewatching, and charting this game, I’ve come to a new conclusion: I would cry too if I completed 27 of 35 passes for 3

WHEW: Justin Fields Explains Why He Unfollowed the Bears on IG

Remember when we said that it would be silly to be concerned over Justin Fields’ social media usage? On the latest episode of the St. Brown Bros podcast Fields confirms that there’s nothing to be concerned about when it comes to his Instagram follows.

“I’m glad we’re talking about it,” Fields remarked when asked why he recently unfollowed the Bears official Instagram account. “Why do people take social media so seriously? I still mess with the Bears … I’m just trying to take a little break; I u

What is the NFL Franchise Tag? Franchise Tag Candidates, Values, and More

Today is the first day NFL teams can place the franchise tag on eligible players. The term Franchise Tag (or simply the tag) is often used but not fully understood. There are two franchise tag variations and different salary cap implications.

Before we go into who might get the tag and some recent cases that didn’t go well, let’s talk about the details of the franchise tag.

What is the NFL Franchise Tag?

In a nutshell, a Franchise Tag is a one-year contract that every NFL team can issue once

Around the NFL: Falcons Looking for a New QB, Bucs Expected to Tag Antoine Winfield Jr., More

The NFL’s transactional period is an exciting time for fans. It also gives us writers plenty to write about for the next couple of months before we can enjoy a slower schedule during the summer months. Currently, we are in a short calm period between the Super Bowl and the next phase of the NFL’s year-round calendar. Things will pick up next week when the Scouting Combine kicks off, but for now, we’ll work with what we have. Atlanta Falcons GM Terry Fontenot shared some insight into their proces

The Caleb Williams Tapes: Oregon (2023)

We’re 66 days from the 2024 NFL Draft. Save for a couple of weeks next month when we have free agency as a distraction, it’s officially draft season. So, we’re starting a new series here at BN called “The Caleb Williams Tapes” in which I will watch Williams’ games against ranked teams (because who cares what he can do against San Jose State?) and share my observations here to help us understand what the top quarterback of the year can (and can’t) do.

Here’s how this will work:

Let’s get into i

Jimmy Garoppolo Suspended by NFL; Expected to be Released by the Raiders

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is being suspended for two games by the league for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.

Even more notable, Schetfer reported that the Raiders plan to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in March in order to avoid paying him an $11.25 million roster bonus that would have become guaranteed on that day.

Schefter says Garoppolo violated a policy by using prescribed med

Taylor Swift donated $100,000 to the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the victim of a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.

On Friday, two separate donations of $50,000 each were made under Swift’s name on a GoFundMe page. While the singer’s representative confirmed the contributions to Variety, The Associated Press independently authenticated the posts.

“Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift,” read the

Justin Fields 2023 Report Card

There hasn’t been a more polarizing story in Chicago sports the last year than that of Justin Fields. A 2021 first-round pick of the franchise has gone from a savior to a bust and back to the future in the last six months.

The city is divided in its opinion of the talented quarterback. In his third season in the NFL, Fields had both good and bad moments. But he also suffered another injury that made him absent for many games. His roller coaster 2023 season has caused Bears fans to engage in a c

Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: 1.0

The Super Bowl is over! And it’s time to finally, rightfully, turn our attention to the Chicago Bears offseason.

I know you’ve seen a bazillion mock drafts since Thanksgiving at every media outlet that covers football, but there’s a reason why I decided to fire up the PFF Mock Draft Simulator and give it a whirl today in this Bears 7-Round Mock Draft.

First, it’s fun. I think that these can be fun exercises if you’re treating them with a degree of realisticness. I have a great example in the f

The Super Bowl is in the books, folks! The 2023 NFL season has come to an end, and we’re on to the next phase of the NFL calendar, the offseason. I’ve mentioned it before, the thrill of covering the NFL, is that it’s a never-ending assignment. The workload lightens, but it never stops. The NFL calendar never rests; it seamlessly transitions between phases. Before we discuss the new Patriots documentary premiering on Friday on Apple TV+, a content note: Around the NFL will move from a Monday/Wedn

Why Super Bowl No. 3 for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs was their Most Impressive Yet

While the Kansas City Chiefs were spraying champagne and smoking cigars in the Las Vegas Raiders locker room at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night, two of the sharpest minds in the football world were having a conversation about Xs and Os.

“Tiger 12, Tom & Jerry right, Gun trips, right bunch, F shuttle,” Andy Reid recited the final play-call of Super Bowl LVIII to NBC Sports’ Peter King. When it comes to football minds, few are sharper than these two—Reid the future Hall of Fame head coach and K

NFL Notes: Patriots Out on Dalvin Cook, Still Interested in Zeke, More

The New York Jets have been linked to Dalvin Cook, a bunch in recent weeks. Never more than last weekend’s visit to Jets camp in which Cook was on the field and cheered by the New York fans. While Cook hasn’t signed with the Jets yet, it seems like another suitor is moving on from the veteran running back.

Along with the Jets and Dolphins, the New England Patriots were rumored to be a potential landing spot for running back Dalvin Cook. However, New England seems to be moving on from that possi

NFL Notes: Ja'Marr Chase Wants Joe Burrow to Take His Time, Josh Jacobs Thoughts, More

Cincinnati Bengals fans are hoping for a speedy recovery for quarterback Joe Burrow. It’s easy to understand why Bengals fans want their star quarterback for Week 1 of the NFL season. By all indications, Burrow is on track for that. He’s been seen walking without a limp and lifting in the weight room this week. But Ja’Marr Chase has another idea for his star quarterback: relax.

NFL Notes: Cam Jordan Gets 2-Year Extension, Hall of Fame Game Thoughts, More

Happy Friday! We’re running out of summer Fridays this year, so I’m getting a few things done around here this morning and heading to the beach with the wife and kids. I hope you have the opportunity to do something similar today or this weekend. That being said, let’s get right into it.

Cam Jordan and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a new two-year, $27.5 million guaranteed contract extension. Jordan’s new extension will keep him in New Orleans through the 2025 season.

The $27.5 million

Friday 5: All Aboard the Zay Flowers Hype Train, Ryan Poles' Patience, Bucs QB Battle, More

Another week is in the books, and we’re another week closer to the start of the 2023 NFL season. I’ve got five topics from this week that I wanted to discuss before we head into the weekend. We’ll start in Baltimore, where the hype train for Zay Flowers is full steam ahead this week.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers is making a strong impression at Ravens camp so far. Ravens safety Marcus Williams predicted last week that Flowers will be a star in the NFL as long as a maintains the wo

NFL Suspends Chiefs' Charles Omenihu, Seahawks' D’Wayne Eskridge 6 Games

In typical Friday fashion, the NFL has decided to announce their latest wave of disciplinary matters this afternoon. As Matt Rooney wrote earlier, Saints running back Alvin Kamara was suspended for the fist three games of the season. Now we have two additional suspensions for violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Chiefs’ defensive lineman Charles Omenihu and Seahawks wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge have each been suspended for the first six games of the 2023 NFL season.

NFL Notes: Chase Young Feeling Explosive, Lions Season Ticket Suege, More

We’ve got football tonight! The Jets and Browns will square off in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, at 7:00 p.m. (CT). We’ll have a pre-game post and game thread up an hour before the game, so come and chat. It’s just an exhibition game, but we’re back, and that’s exciting.

Speaking of back, Chase Young believes that he is indeed back. Young has been the subject of much debate since he tore his ACL during the 2021 season and missed almost all last season. As a result, the Commanders decli

5 Reasons Why You Should Watch the Hall of Fame Game Tonight

I know, I know. It’s just the Hall of Fame Game. No Aaron Rodgers. No Deshaun Watson. No, Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Myles Garrett, or Nick Chubb. But let’s be honest, it’s still football, and we’re still going to watch. It’s been almost six months since we’ve been able to watch an NFL game. So, even though this is the most watered-down version of an NFL game, it’s a welcomed taste of what’s to come over the next six months.

If you’re on the fence about tuning in tonight, here are five reas

Training Camp Notebook — August 3, 2023: Commanders QB Battle, Diontae Johnson Ready for Fresh Start in '23, More

You may have read it a time or two, but we’ve got football tonight. We also had training camp today. Here are some of the happenings of note at training camps around the league, including in D.C., where there might be something of a QB battle brewing between Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett.
• Heading into camp, the Commanders’ starting QB job was billed as Sam Howell’s job to lose. I suppose it’s still that, but Ron Rivera’s comments today make it seem a little bit closer than we would have imagi
